Connect Your DJ App
Before its first run, Fusor Studio needs three settings: the virtual MIDI bus, the DJ application it sends to, and the two decks you mix between. Setting up supplies all three.
Setup has two parts:
- Guided Setup, the wizard inside Fusor Studio, which walks you through creating the virtual MIDI
bus, selects your DJ application, and captures the state of your controls. On the Mac there is no
bus to create: Fusor Studio provides its own MIDI connection,
Fusor Studio, which your DJ app lists while Fusor Studio is open. - The Fusor mapping file, imported into your DJ application so that it responds to what Fusor Studio sends and reports its own controls back.
Guided Setup
Guided Setup opens by itself on a first run. To open it again later, click the gear icon (Ctrl+, on Windows, Cmd+, on the Mac) and choose the Guided Setup tab. A screen you leave untouched keeps its current setting.
Each screen gives its own instructions.
Setup, the first tutorial, goes through it screen by screen and states the
checkpoint you should reach at the end: a status line reading Unarmed, with a green telemetry
light beside it.
Open your DJ application before you start. Several of the screens reference it while you are on them.
Import the mapping file for your DJ app
Fusor Studio controls your DJ software through a MIDI mapping file made for that app, the same idea as a hardware controller's factory mapping but delivered as a file you import. Mapping files are on the Fusor downloads page, the same page as the installer.
Traktor Pro
Traktor Pro uses a Traktor Settings Import (TSI) file, Fusor.tsi, on Windows and on the Mac. It
sets every Fusor device's In-Port and Out-Port to Fusor Studio.
- On the downloads page, under Traktor Pro Mapping, click Download Fusor.tsi.
- In Traktor's Preferences > Controller Manager, under Device Setup, click Add... and then Import from Disk. This adds the Fusor devices to any you already have set up, so Fusor Studio runs alongside your existing controllers.
- Select the downloaded
.tsifile. - Verify the port assignments are still set correctly after import.
Step 4 needs the virtual MIDI bus to exist, so leave it until you have created the port in Guided
Setup. On Windows, name the loopMIDI port Fusor Studio and the ports are already set; with any
other name, set them by hand. On the Mac, Fusor Studio must be open for Traktor to list
Fusor Studio.
The mapping covers EQ, channel faders, crossfader, FX units, stems, tempo, and the telemetry Traktor sends back to Fusor Studio. Traktor Pro Setup covers the MIDI port configuration this mapping needs, soft takeover, and the rest of Traktor's own settings.
For other DJ applications, see our Roadmap.
Building a mapping by hand
If you would rather build a mapping yourself, or check what a particular control expects, Teach Mode sends one control's MIDI message at a time for your DJ app's MIDI Learn to detect. The channel and CC number behind every address is in MIDI Mapping.
Next steps
- Setup: the first tutorial. It runs Guided Setup screen by screen and ends with the Fusor player ready to arm.
- Traktor Pro Setup: the MIDI ports, soft takeover, the tempo-fader range and the telemetry Traktor sends back.
